Close by, the small town of Marina offers a variety of restaurants and conveniences. If you long for a break from the rat race, look no further. You've found it at Marina Dunes Resort.

In the mood for exploring? The towns of Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Santa Cruz all beckon with their "beach town" charm, shops, gourmet restaurants and cafés.

Monterey Bay, a world-class destination, is a canvas painted with broad brush strokes of green Monterey cypress, blue ocean, white sand, and golden California poppies. In the foreground, you'll watch sea otters and take in historic buildings, sailboats, and colorful festivals. The 17-Mile Drive on the southern edge of the bay will introduce you to the natural scenery of the area, and you may decide to stop off for a round of golf at the championship Pebble Beach Golf Course, the most renowned of the more than twenty golf courses found in the Monterey area.

Monterey & Cannery Row
Monterey is a page off John Steinbeck's 1945 novel, Cannery Row, complete with seaside warehouses, flophouses, and fish canneries. One almost expects to see Doc and Lee Chong, Steinbeck's characters, emerge from a creaky old wooden door around the next corner. Preserved as an historic district, the area houses many of the original buildings in the book, as well as boutique shops and restaurants. Stop in for handmade fudge, ice cream, or a lunch of fresh-caught fish. At the end of a short stroll down the Row, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium with the family. Monterey Bay is one of the deepest sea trenches in the world, habitat to some of the most unique and exotic wildlife on earth. The Aquarium offers a glimpse into bay sea life, including sea otters, sharks, jellyfish, and a kelp forest. Don't forget the Aviary, where visitors come within inches of sandpipers and other native bird species.

Unwind by tasting some of the great local wines of the area. The Monterey Wine Festival offers tastes of great wines as well as educational seminars in the pairing of wines with different foods. Plan your weekend around one of the annual happenings such as the Monterey Blues Festival and Jazz Festival (made famous by legends Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix). Our front desk staff is happy to inform you of upcoming events, like the farmers market and the annual whalefest.

Do you hike or ride a bike? Within a couple of miles of the resort, the Monterey Coastal Trail makes a great hike through the cities and natural scenery of Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel, including various state parks and beaches. Didn't bring a bike? No problem. Marina Dunes Resort has bike rentals available on the property, or rent from several shops in the area, including four-passenger family bikes. The Monterey Coastal Trail runs uninterrupted from Marina to Pacific Grove and can be picked up just outside the resort. Why stop your exploration at the shoreline? Paddle a kayak with your family near Pacific Grove or up Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reserve for some great nature watching. Kayaks can also be rented on Del Monte Beach or Cannery Row from Adventures by the Sea. Some of the best whale watching and scuba diving in the US is just off the shore, or schedule a fishing trip to land a monster tuna, salmon, or cod.
